Ambisonic / binaural / immersive fold to stereo-mono: phase checklist
Ambisonic beds, binaural renders, and immersive stems often sound huge in headphones and spatial playback. On stereo delivery or mono fold (phone, social, broadcast, archival), Mid energy can thin or cancel when higher-order components, decode paths, and stereo folds share the same content with different timing and polarity. That is usually decode/fold hygiene and arrival-time fights first, not a widener problem. Fix decode path, polarity between parallel renders, and one hero stereo fold first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on a stereo bed that must stay stereo before mono fold.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not an ambisonic decoder, not a binaural renderer, and not a substitute for mono audition of the stereo or mono delivery bus. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights on stereo folds.
What ambisonic / binaural fold failure sounds like
- Huge in headphones, thin on phone stereo. Spatial bloom collapses when the platform folds to stereo or mono.
- Two parallel decodes fight each other. Binaural render plus stereo fold, or Ambix plus FuMa path, share content with different delay.
- Higher-order components cancel Mid on fold. HOA beds never mono-checked after decode.
- Fine in spatial preview, broken for Spotify / YouTube stereo. Delivery never auditioned as LoRo or mono.
- Same class of problem as surround / 5.1 fold, film/TV LoRo, game audio mono fold.
Fast mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Solo the stereo delivery bus (not only binaural headphones). Flip a utility to mono.
- A/B spatial / HOA muted vs open under the stereo fold. Note what disappears: body, Mid, transient bite.
- Solo pairs: Ambix vs FuMa decode, binaural vs stereo fold, immersive stem vs mono.
- Check correlation on the stereo bus, then with immersive layers muted vs full.
Order of operations (before spectral phase rotation)
1. One hero decode / fold path
Do not stack Ambix, FuMa, binaural, and a second stereo fold all hot into delivery. Pick one hero stereo fold for mono-compatible destinations. Related: surround fold.
2. Polarity between parallel renders
Flip binaural vs stereo fold, or alternate decoder outputs, when Mid returns immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase.
3. Delay-align secondary decode to the hero fold
Parallel renders often arrive a few samples apart. A small delay on the secondary path often restores body better than any widener.
4. Prefer Mid-safe stereo fold; quieter spatial color
Spatial color should not replace the hero stereo image for phone and social. If every immersive layer sits hot under the fold, mono almost always hollows Mid. Pull extras first.
5. Skip Haas / imagers on the stereo fold before delivery
Short-delay width on an already-decoded stereo bed makes cans huge and phones hollow. Keep critical low-mid centered for stream and print.
6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights
If the stereo fold must stay stereo and mono still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B, rotator bypassed vs engaged.
Path types and typical failure modes
| Path | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Ambix + FuMa / dual decode | Mid cancels on stereo fold | One hero decode; polarity; delay |
| Binaural + stereo fold stacked | Huge in cans, thin on phone | Hero fold; quieter binaural color |
| HOA bed → stereo without check | Body / bite disappears | Mono audition; simplify layers |
| Immersive stem + stereo bed | Combs on social / broadcast | Polarity; one hero; correlation |
| Spatial preview ≠ delivery | Fine in VR, hollow on Spotify | master bus mono / YouTube mono |
Delivery checklist (to send)
1. Label Ambix / FuMa / binaural / stereo fold paths
Name every render so operators know what hits stereo and mono destinations. Ambiguous stacks get left open and comb on fold.
2. Mono-check stereo delivery alone, then with immersive layers
Solo Mid and body in mono. Then open spatial color in mono. Note fights between secondary renders and hero fold.
3. Watch phone, social, broadcast, and archival destinations
Most listeners still hear stereo or mono, not HOA. Guides: surround fold, film/TV LoRo, YouTube mono.
4. Optional null / mono workflow before upload

When PHIXER helps
- The material is already a stereo fold that must stay stereo, not a mono render you fake-widened.
- Decode path, polarity, delay align, and hero-path levels are cleaned up, but mono still hollows a band.
- You can A/B mono with the plugin bypassed and hear clearer Mid without wrecking the stereo image.
- You are not using it to "fix" dual Ambix/FuMa stacks or to replace a proper decode / downmix.
Decision table
| You notice… | First try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mid thins when binaural opens under stereo fold | Polarity; delay secondary; quieter secondary | Arrival-time fight |
| HOA + stereo collapse on phone | Hero fold; polarity; delay | Stacked identical content |
| Fine in spatial preview, thin on Spotify | Mono delivery bus; pull extras | Preview ≠ delivery fold |
| Stereo fold still cancels by band | PHIXER on that stereo bed | Residual spectral L/R fight |
| Mono render alone is dull | Tone / EQ / decode settings | Not an L/R repair job |
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- You have not mono-auditioned the stereo delivery bus yet.
- The fix is obviously one hero decode, polarity, delay, or quieter spatial color under the fold.
- You want PHIXER to make the bed louder, wider, or "more immersive." Wrong job.
- The path is already mono and the print problem is balance or EQ.
- See also when not to use PHIXER.
Quick path: Solo stereo delivery in mono → one hero decode/fold → polarity between parallel renders → delay-align secondary → quieter spatial color → skip Haas/imagers → mono-check with full layers → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on the fold → deliver again for stereo / mono destinations.
